Gather & Stitch | Not just a Regular Sewing Class

A Creative Sewing Meet-Up | Get Creative & Like Minded Others

There’s something special about coming together to create. A few weeks ago, we hosted our fourth sewing class, “Gather and Stitch” — a fun and friendly meetup where people of all ages and skill levels can design and sew their own custom tote bags.

Whether you’re an experienced sewer or a complete beginner, Gather and Stitch is all about learning, connecting, and creating something you’re proud of. You can bring your own fabrics or choose from our in-house selection at the Goodstart Jones workshop. And yes — we make sure everyone feels at home with drinks, snacks, and good vibes all around.

Building a Creative Community

Our sewing classes run every Sunday and Thursday evening, designed to give people a third space outside of home and work — a place to relax, meet like-minded creatives, and learn new skills. It’s not just a class; it’s a community.

A Class Full of Firsts

This week’s session welcomed three newcomers who had never used a sewing machine before. Each had a background in art, which came through beautifully in their bag designs.

We started simple — practising straight stitches on paper and fabric to build confidence on our Jack H2 industrial walking foot machines, which are ideal for heavy-duty fabrics like Cordura and nylon thread.
The machines are smooth and easy to use, with adjustable stitch speeds and guide lines to help everyone stay on track.

Once everyone got the hang of it, we moved on to the creative part — selecting fabric swatches, choosing colour combinations, and cutting patterns. With a mix of technique and imagination, they transformed flat fabrics into beautiful, functional tote bags. Each bag was unique — just like its maker.

Learning by Doing

Over the course of four hours, our beginners went from curious learners to confident makers. By the end, they each walked away with a finished tote bag — and a huge sense of achievement. The quality of their work was genuinely impressive for first-time sewists, and it reminded us why we love running these sessions.
